Nepal

In Nepal, we work with an established project partner to provide safe homes for survivors of human trafficking or abuse, a private school and robust prevention programs.

Our local partner has worked faithfully in-country for nearly 20 years, restoring over 600 individuals to health and freedom. Many individuals on the leadership team have graduated from our safe home and recovery programs. They lead with determination, passion and empathy that comes from having experienced trauma and healing themselves.

Leading with Empathy

Human traffickers often prey on rural villages, manipulating children with false promises of attending school or finding work—only to trap them in slavery. An open border between Nepal and India (1850 kilometres in length) makes detection of cross-border trafficking a challenge, and Nepal a highly-targeted area by traffickers.

Our prevention team works to research and identify areas of the country with a higher risk of exploitation or trafficking. At the time of their recruitment, most victims of child trafficking were not attending school. We provide children in vulnerable communities with the textbooks, supplies and uniforms needed to attend public rural schools.

With the trust and support of local leaders, our prevention team educates the community about the dangers of human trafficking. Using engaging media and personal stories in the local language, our local partner can educate the students, teachers, families and wider community. In the last 20 years, our local partner has presented anti-trafficking programs to 300,000 individuals.

Back

Effective aftercare for survivors requires years of care and love. Our safe homes provide a secure environment for children to find healing, receive access to counselling and medical care, build safe relationships and be encouraged to pursue their dreams.

We currently support 150 boys and girls across 5 safe homes in Nepal, ranging in ages from newborn to 25 years old. Our local partners encourage young adults to dream and connect them to the opportunities they need to thrive.

After graduating from university or job training, staff help individuals transition from the safe home when they feel ready. Our local partner has seen a 96% success rate in reintegrating survivors to health and independence.

Safe Homes

Many of the children in our safe homes have traumatic backgrounds that make it difficult for them to assimilate into a local public school. Teachers don’t understand their history, and certain environments can be triggering to their past.

Our private school is staffed with teachers trained in trauma-care, ensuring a safe and dignifying learning space for our students. For youth who are starting school for the first time at an older age, we have specialized classes where they can work one-on-one with teachers when needed.

Education

Agriculture Project

A rural farm property serves as a haven for high-risk survivors that need a safe space away from the city, and a retreat centre available to our local team. Over time, the farm will meet the produce, poultry and dairy needs for the 200 children we feed daily across all our safe homes.

Within 5 years, we aim to surpass the food needs of our safe homes and produce crops that we can sell at the market to offset our operating costs.

We provide licensed, free medical and dental care to rural communities as an effective way to care for the vulnerable and build relationships with local leaders. When local communities trust our team, we are welcomed to provide educational sponsorship and hold anti-trafficking presentations.

Medical Outreach

We encourage individuals to pursue work they enjoy through job training. We connect students with classes in trades, baking, hair and makeup, jewellery, photography, tailoring and more. We want every student to feel accomplished and excited about their chosen field.

Vocational Training Centre

Our local partner is dedicated, established and has the capacity to expand aftercare and prevention programs throughout the country, but housing instability is a major challenge.

Current Challenge:

Increase sustainability through the purchase of land and building of new safe home facilities.
