Operational Costs
The cost of renting facilities makes up the majority of operating expenses for each of our local partners. Ownership of land and buildings will reduce operational costs by an average of 40%. (Land ownership is virtually unattainable in the countries where we work for those working in the social welfare sector.)
Renting safe homes means that our local partners could be evicted at any time. Without warning, the 20-40 children and leaders living in a home could be forced to find a new place to live in just a few short weeks. (In fact, this has happened to one of our safe homes at least once every year.) Not only is this inconvenient, it disrupts the healing process for the children in our care. A stable, consistent environment is crucial for their restorative journey.
In some cases, our safe homes need to have increased security features to protect children from abusers who remain in close proximity. In rented facilities it is a challenge to implement the level of security needed. Owning and building our own safe homes will allow us to design custom security features that ensure safety for all children in our care.

We currently rent all of our facilities. In Nepal we rent 12 different buildings (this includes safe homes, offices, a school, a vocational training centre and a counselling centre). In Cambodia we rent 4 different buildings (this includes safe homes and offices).
Each local partner will have different needs based on their unique context. Beyond looking for land that fits within our parameters for size and budget, we consider factors such as: proximity to healthcare, post secondary education, public transportation and shopping centres; access to stable power and good water supply; and existing road access to the site.

Over a 10-12 year span, our goal is to help each of our local partners purchase land, build new facilities and implement agriculture and social venture projects, reducing their dependence on outside funding. The timelines of each phase will be unique to each context, but a general timeline might look as follows:

The property will be fully owned by our local partner’s registered national charity (these national charities execute all of the frontline services and have members of the Ally team sitting on their advisory boards). Additionally, the land we purchase has a covenant applied to it that says it cannot be sold or used for any purposes outside of social services and education for the next 100 years.
In the process of scouting and purchasing land, our team in Canada and our local partners work collaboratively to view and evaluate each potential piece of property against our mutual criteria.
During the building process, it’s important to us that our local partners have full ownership over the project. Because they are experts in providing aftercare, we make sure they are involved in all stakeholder meetings regarding building design and function. Our team in Canada works collaboratively with them to ensure that everything is purpose-built to last.
Ally will remain involved in the operations of our local partners. We will continue to increase sustainability by working with them to develop agriculture projects and social ventures. As our local partners become more and more financially self-sufficient, we will focus our efforts on investing in leadership development and providing emergency relief.
While our local partner selection process involves a number of steps, a good summary of our our criteria is that we base partnerships on:
The ability of the partner organisation to provide an exceptional level of trauma-informed care to children
The relevant experience and track record of the partner organisation
The opportunity for long-term sustainability and capacity building
We believe that building and maintaining a strong relationship between the leadership of our local partner organisations and our Canadian team is vital to providing the best care and development possible for all individuals. Because we work cross-culturally in complex situations, with vulnerable and traumatised populations, high levels of trust between Ally and our local partners is paramount.
Donors will receive regular reporting on the status of each phase through email updates and informal video updates. A more comprehensive overview will be sent out upon the completion of each phase. Donors who give at a certain level will also receive access to a live feed of the property so that they can observe the progress of the building phase.
It is important that our local partners are able to give their full attention to caring for children and managing their frontline operations. The coordination required to facilitate donor trips redirects a portion of this focus. To safeguard the capacity of our teams and the privacy of the children in their care, we are highly selective about how often we facilitate donor trips to the projects. Opportunities may be extended to donors on a case-by-case basis.
